Blueprints for public cloud, more NSX options and additional VM template controls with Abiquo 3.8.5
Version 3.8.5 of the Abiquo hybrid cloud solution introduces three new major features:
Improved Template Control
Customers asked us to help them control the way users consume VM templates by adding constraints on the configuration. Abiquo 3.8.5 adds:
- Minimum and maximum CPU and RAM values to set lower and upper bounds
- Ability to create fixed configuration VM templates by setting the max/min to the same value
- A new privilege to allow certain user roles to override the limits
These features help cloud administrators ensure that users only select “reasonable” values for Virtual Machines, support VMs with applications sensitive to the virtual hardware config such as SAP HANA and help with capacity management by preventing very large VM deployments in smaller cloud deployments.
Additional NSX options
As one of the only true multi-tenant self-service cloud platforms to support VMware NSX for software defined networking, Abiquo is continually updating our solution to meet customer needs. Abiquo 3.8.2 introduced the NSX integration that works with the gateway blueprint, Abiquo 3.8.3 added support for external and public networks and now Abiquo 3.8.5 adds support for an additional ECMP blueprints over and above the gateway blueprint.
Abiquo has plugins to support the following NSX blueprints for virtual datacenter networking:
- Gateway using ESG router
- The NSX gateway plugin creates a single ESG for use as router
- Maximum 9 VXLANs
- ECMP using DLR and ESG
- The ECMP plugin creates a DLR and multiple ESGs as configured
There is a LOT more in this release – too much to put in this post – such as support for External and Public networks, DHCP fallback, different network solutions per tenant and more.
Use blueprints across private and public clouds
Released with Abiquo 3.8, Virtual Appliance Specifications (“VApp Specs”) enabled users and admins to create application blueprints with complete configurations including VMs, networking, firewall policies and more. Users can deploy Specs to datacenters other than the one in which the Spec was created, and Abiquo 3.8 allocates resources and helps the user resolve issues such as missing templates.
With public cloud support for Virtual Appliance Specs in Abiquo 3.8.5 users can
- Create Specs in private cloud for use in public cloud
- Deploy from Specs in public cloud
- Create Specs from public cloud for use in private cloud<
Specs save the number of virtual resources in an abstract notation that is not related to any specific cloud technology. For example, for floating IPs in public cloud, Abiquo will save the use of a public network with the corresponding number of public IPs.
A new VM preview pane helps users to see and edit VM configurations before the new Virtual Appliance is created from the Spec.
